Among Giants A Life With Whales by Charles Flip Nicklin University of Chicago Press 2011 5995 is a breathtakingly orgeous volume of photographs of whales The book offers accompanying essays by leading whale researchers and contains some fascinating information I was particularly intrigued by the author s observation that humpback whales which are the leading stars of whale viewing excursions in Hawaii have never historically been observed in large numbers near Hawaii The author tells us that 10000 humpbacks pass through the Hawaiian Islands each winter season p155 One uestion that especially intrigues me is exactly when humpbacks started coming to Hawaii and why In artwork and oral histories of ancient Hawaiians there is no record of humpback whales being there and there is no evidence that humpbacks were there in large numbers in the mid 1800 s during the heyday of whaling The whalers who provisioned in Hawaii in the winter couldn t have overlooked the num. Ory I was happy to be proven wrong he comes across as a humble helper and observer of whale research and behaviour He has iven his life to witnessing the magnificent beasts in a time when people have made amazing developments in their ability to observe whales in their own habitat No longer looking at whales from the deck of a whaling boat in Nicklin s lifetime better diving euipment photographic technology and underwater sound recordings all changed the way humans see whales Fascinating stories and of course beautiful photos This is an amazing book with beautiful photos of whales who I just recently came to appreciate after seeing them up close It s well written about and by a photographer who s able to capture all those amazing photos I would recommend this book highly While definitely a beautiful coffee table book the pictures are mesmerizing I enjoyed the narrative and actually read the whole thingsomething I don t normally do with these types of books. N as they helped open newround in the field of marine mammalogy Among Giants tells the story of Nicklin’s life and career on the high seas from his first ill euipped shoots in the mid 1970s through his long association with the National Geographic Society to the present when he is one of the founders of Whale Trust a nonprofit conservation and research roup Nicklin is eual parts photographer adventurer self trained scientist and raconteur and Among Giants reflects all those sides matching breathtaking images to firsthand accounts of their making and highlighting throughout the importance of conservation and new advances in our understanding of whale behavior With Nicklin as our uide we see not just whales but also our slowly rowing understanding of their hidden lives
