I m still playing catch up here I actually finished this book about a week ago As usual you can certainly feel free to choose between the longer detailed review at my online reading journal or the shorter version here To my ntense delight Erlendur s back albeit as a young patrolman on the night shift n a preuel to the entire series On his regular shift one night young patrolman Erlendur receives a report that takes him to the scene of the drowning of a homeless man who went by the name Hannibal Since Library Wars: Love and War 10 it didn t seem tonvestigators that there had been any foul play CID assumed that Han I ended up enjoying this story Erlendur s a young cop going about his own business In the course of his duties he befriends a homeless man and when he dies n a drowning begins to Crossing Boarders investigate This book starts slow but as the story moves along I realized that the readers slowly getting to know how this man thinks and works We re being ntroduced to a young man who hasn t uite found his path n life This appears to be a character driven series This sort of series gets better as The Outcast Highlander it goes on I m looking forward to reading of this series This story may have been a bit slow butt was a good mystery the people grew and the ending was satisfactory A good start for a new series There s a lot of drinking and drunkenness n Reykjavik Baiae if ones to believe this book LOL Chronologically the last we knew of Erlendur the police detective of Arnaldur s series he was perhaps forever searching for the remains of his younger brother As young boys they got lost Celebrity, Inc.: How Famous People Make Money in a wilderness snowstorm andnadvertently separated Erlendur has never given up the search for his lost brother This chronological last sighting of Erlendur was In Den Nachmittag Geflüstert Gedichte 1909 1914 in Fur ustrandir Strange Shores The next to last bookn the series The Chess Match Reid Alleje 2 instead featured a young Erlendur backn the beginning of his career This latest book goes even further back La Collection Du Centre Georges Pompidou: Un Parcours Au Musee D'Art Moderne de La Ville de Paris in time to 1974 While the Chess Matchs set during the Fisher Spasski duel Reykjav kurn tur Reykjavik Nights concerns Die Besessene itself with missing people and anchors Erlendur s obsession almost his reason for being finding the missingYet heres another sense Ghost Flight (Will Jaeger, in which Arnaldur the author has his main character search for the missing the body of one of the persons he concerns himself withs not missing Kafir Liberal in the sense oft having disappeared his body was uickly found Rather his searchlight Flight or Fight is on after a man who most had forgotten and was toonsignificant for anyone to look closely Vlad III Dracula: The Life and Times of the Historical Dracula into why he drowned Erlendurn his free time wonders and discovers this homeless drunkard s fate and who he was So along with Reykjavik Divided like Destiny in allts drunken modality Burden and Prayer in those dayst was not fashionable or for tourists we see how the homeless men and women survive or notI was a student Where's Ringo? In the book of that beautiful day s excellent even the appearance of what his fellow policeman calls the bloody communists completes the picture This next to last chapter really sits outside the main story line and the only connection with the oeuvre n general The Divide: American Injustice in the Age of the Wealth Gap is thatt Latin for Children Primer a DVDs Chant CD is made the setting of Erlendur literally being tapped to join Iceland s new and tiny detective suad I thinkt celebrates a special memory What a sweep n one book the down and out at their most pathetic huddling for warmth n the winter dark the nation reveling n ts survival Brazilian Surrender in the bright summer glory Its something few foreigners realize unless they live n Iceland how happily one turns one s face to the sun n lee from the wind Also the drunkards and the homeless relish that moment and Arnaldur has gotten that scene too The proliferation of ScandinavianNordic crime fiction Godforsaken Idaho is fascinating to me At first I thoughtt was just a fad that would die out eventually but no Und Nietzsche weinte it s still a big deal than a decade later Andt should be too because all the ones I have read have been greatThis book s by an author from Iceland andnaturally enough s set Peer Support Handbook for the Police Officer in Iceland Its actually a preuel to the main series which features Detective Erlendur In this book Erlendur The Devil's Double Buch, Deutsch Ausgabe: Ich war Saddams Sohn is still a young traffic officerAt the very beginning of the book an alcoholic tramps found drowned n a pond A year later Erlendur s still thinking about this case which was pretty much B is for Buckeye: An Ohio Alphabet immediately closed Andt turns out that on the same weekend as that drowning a woman went missing on her way home from a club Even though he Angriff The German Attack On Stalingrad In Photos is a traffic cop Erlandur starts lookingnto both these cases Maybe they are related In order to find out you ll have to read the bookThis book has all the elements I like n a crime novel Interesting characters good suspense uite a few false leads and the crimes aren t solved until the very end of the book What could you ask for And to top t all off Erlendur collects booksLuckily for me I haven t read any of the main series so I will shortly be reading the first one to be translated nto English anyway It s called Jar CityThe only slight problem I had was trying to pronounce some of the place names Skolavordustigur and Hverfisgata for nstance This s a preuel to the Erlunder series which has remained one of my favorite Nordic series Was wonderful seeing the young Erlunder n the role of a traffic cop but how he still managed to put together things that had escaped others The bones of the later Erlunder already Up North Michigan Wines by the Bay: Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas Explored in place Not able to let go of something untilt Reckless: My Life as a Pretender is solved to his satisfaction This plot revolved around a missing woman and a group of street people Loved to see the compassion he had for these people unable to stop drinking and so down on their luck Loved the character of Hannibal and glad we got to see his back story one thats tragic and brought him to the street A very good series with a remarkable character I found this a bit disappointing I ve read several other Erlendur novels and have always found them extremely atmospheric I found this one rather matter of fact It was nteresting to read this preuel and find out how Erlendur started as a detective However f this had been the first of the books that I read I doubt Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now if I would have read further I purchased several books by Arnaldur Indri ason at our library book sale this winter but rather than read them out of order I decided to start with the preuel Reykjav k Nights Murdern Reykjav k This full length novel which Guns of Arizona: A Land Where Legends Are Made is translated from Icelandic by Victoria Cribb features traffic patrolman Erlendur Sveinsson Having just finished a five book series filled with switchblade wielding murderesses rapists and anarchist this book was almost boring or highly refreshing take your pick I choose the latter The paces slow but steady Erlendur Bitter Creek Posse: A tale of the Old West is a young policeman who works the night shift where he deals with drunk drivers domestic disturbances loiterers and traffic accidents The story opens with Erlendur being first officer on the scene when a pair of boys come upon the body of a vagrantn a pool of water He recognizes the man Hannibal as someone he has spoken with on a number of occasions After a time he can t get the man out of his mind and he begins Dárek z pravé lásky: 12 zimních políbení investigating on his own timeEventually he links the case of a missing woman to Hannibal s death since they both occurred about the same time Could both have been murdered Erlendur goes about makingnuiries with those who knew both of the deceased He talks to street people and to the sister of Hannibal This uiet private man who shares so little of his personal feelings with his girlfriend Bulls and Burglars is extremely charitable toward the down trodden acuaintances of Hannibal a man he knew so little about Now that mans dead and he cares deeply about what happened to him This speaks volumes about who Erlendur Rambles Around Folkestone: And Other Special Articles (Classic Reprint) is as a man Those whom others disregard as unworthy vagrants Erlendur treat as human beingsThe Times an unexplained deathTHE LOSTA homeless man Erlendur knowss found drowned But few people care Or when a young woman on her way home from a club vanishes Both cases go coldTHE SEARCHERTwo lost people from two different worlds Erlendur.
